- Microbial induced corrosion (MIC) of reinforced concrete sewer piping and manholes is a significant issue in Australia and overseas costing water authorities hundreds of millions of dollars annually. While ongoing field trials have shed light on what is happening at the macro scale some questions remain about the nature of the reaction front and the acid input required to drive the various stages of the corrosion process. To better understand the small scale dynamics a laboratory study of the acid neutralisation behaviour of newly manufactured and previously exposed sewer pipe concrete has been undertaken in conjunction with a study of the nature of the reaction front. The study findings and their implications for sewer pipe corrosion particularly in light of recent field trial results are discussed.
